Display hydrophobic for the future Samsung Galaxy? | Want … – Want …

Samsung is the world’s largest manufacturer of displays for smartphones and, at the time, no other company can hinder the domain of the asian giant. Despite this, Samsung continues to seek new solutions to improve its devices. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) of the Department of Energy have confirmed that the Korean company has acquired the license for the use of a technology hydrophobic for smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices.

The search was launched about three years ago has allowed us to produce a water repellent finish that, in addition to water, keep away from the screen even dust, smudges, and fingerprints, while reducing at the same time the reflection of the light. These are the properties of a particular layer of a porous glass frit, named "optically clear superhydrophobic films", which has a contact angle of the drops of water between 155 and 165 degrees. In practice, the drops of water bounce off the glass, carrying away the particles of dust, as you can see in the following video.

the researchers at The ORNL have developed the technology superidrofobica, by depositing a film of glass, ultra-thin on a glass surface and subsequently heating the coated glass to melt the two materials. With a process of etching the selective has been created a three-dimensional network of glass with a high content of silicon that resembles the coral microscopic, and which possesses water-repellent properties and anti-glare coating.

The technology can also be used in the production of windows and solar panels. Samsung has obtained the licence for the display of smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices, such as washing machines, refrigerators and TV. The latest products of the Korean company, they are water resistant (certified IP68), but in the future will be even hydrophobic.
