Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 is the Korean manufacturer’s new compact smartphone that inherits from the top of the range 2014 materials and the general approach. It is a device which appreciate first of all the contained dimensions that allow for high handling and ergonomics. The Super AMOLED display provides a good view of the contents and the battery will not let us walk mid-day.

The stencil is the same as the Galaxy S5, only smaller while maintaining the aspect ratio. Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 is basically a Galaxy S5 in more compact version, with all the pros and cons of this approach: if, on the one hand, it is nice for those who appreciate the design of the top of the range, on the other hand is monotonous and unoriginal.
On the front we have a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution (1280 × 720), 2.1 megapixel front camera, the speaker flanked by light sensor and proximity while on the bottom of the typical 3-button task manager, home and back. Inside the home button, which is physical and not touch, do not miss the biometric fingerprint sensor ready to unlock the screen at each step of our finger.
On the back we find a “simple” camera 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and the sensor to detect the heartbeat, which is activated by simply relying on the index finger. Under the hood a Samsung Exynos 5540 processor that operates at a frequency of 1.4 GHz, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory expandable via MicroSD. Connectivity is comprehensive and, in fact, we find the module WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0, and that the support for GSM, 2G, 3G and LTE. There is also an infrared emitter to operate devices such as TV, cable box and VCR.

Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 is equipped with a 4.5-inch display with HD resolution (1280 × 720) Super AMOLED and technology. The technology used is the usual Samsung (since she herself produces these panels) and the quality does not differ that much from that of his elder brother, with some differences given by the lower resolution of a panel slightly smaller. The visibility is very good, also under the direct light of the sun thanks to the automatic adjustment using the light sensor.
The blacks are deep and whites appear cold (or slightly bluish), the colors are very vivid and bright as you would expect from a Super AMOLED panel. This feature can pleasure as pleasure: the colors are over-saturated, however, and for this, they are very unrealistic. The colors you see on the screen of the smartphone are not, for example, the colors you see then looking at the pictures taken on your PC, because your PC will be much more subtle and almost washed out.

The photographs taken with the Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 appear generally good quality. The colors are not rendered very well and are slightly under-saturated, but overall appear to be sufficiently realistic. Do not expect to take quality pictures: Galaxy Mini S5 does not allow you to replace even a compact camera from a few tens of euros.
Nevertheless, to make shots “on the fly” and have at hand an object moments that can immortalize perhaps hardly repeatable (eg. cats sleeping in absurd positions) is more than enough.

The battery life of the Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 is not a record, but still quite good and is part of the media. The X mAh battery lets you use the phone for about 4 hours with the display on and get to evening with ease.
Our usual test returned:

The results fit perfectly in the average smartphone last year. Samsung Galaxy S5 is therefore a good companion for the day type, with push notifications in email and web browsing.

At the edge of Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 find Android 4.4.3 with Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz user interface. The version of the interface is the same as that found on the Galaxy S5 older brother and, therefore, are all features of Samsung software features.
Among the pre-installed applications are S Health, that allow us to track our health from what we eat and how many times per minute coming to our heart beats thanks to the sensor for detecting the heartbeat on the back of the phone. We find application to control the TV and the devices that use infrared for home, My Magazine for the latest news always at hand, Studio to edit the images, a file manager and a binder where the Galaxy Apps to download a variety of applications Android collected by Samsung for its users.
In terms of functionality we have instead S Finder, which allows us to look for something inside the phone and not only, and the “Quick Connect” to see in a screen all wireless devices to which you can connect.
On the level of privacy you can set the screen unlock with fingerprint (the sensor is located on the home button) and, to save battery You can set the screen in black and white so as to save energy and extend the operational life of the smartphone.
Overall, the software runs smoothly without major lag. The TouchWiz, however, has never been characterized by a fluidity equal stock Android interface and this can be an important limitation for those who prefer to have a very smooth and fast.
In conclusion
If the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a device the size too generous for your money The Samsung Galaxy Mini S5 will be a very good substitute. The two smartphones in fact do not differ much except for physical dimensions, and some technical features which, however, you can pass on. The RAM fact, although less is sufficient, the camera produces the good shots, the processor performs very well and is very bright display is crisp. A great smartphone Mini but which as usual is marketed at a significantly higher price: 449 euro. Fortunately, the online price is already dropped to around 100 euro a few weeks after launch.
