Rebel Galaxy – Review – Eurogamer.it

It is the moment of space-themed games. The trend seems to have started after FTL and Elite Dangerous, two big successes (although very different from each other) that appear to have caused a certain obsession with the developers for the theme.

Now, if you leaf through Steam, galaxies explored abound and sauces in which to do it are the most different: persistent multiplayer, survival with crafting, management, real-time strategy, action … there for everyone, and if you are fans of the genre you will be surely happy but also quite busy deciding which licenses on offer and in the works deserve your attention (and your money).

Galaxy Rebel it is part of the group and it is definitely a surprise because it comes with very little hype and without special conditions, bringing a package of features very complete and interesting. But first things first …

Rebel Galaxy is a title exclusively single-player mode with a single “story”. The player is catapulted into the shoes of a young adventurer who must make his way in the hard life of the entrepreneur space. So you will have a main story of which follow the thread, plenty of side missions and many free activities to earn money with which you use to increase the power and capacity of your spaceship. Among these activities are the mining, trade, exploration and piracy.

The fighting in Rebel Galaxy can become a thing tactically rather elaborate (and interesting)

The entire game takes place on board your ship, in a continuous mix of intergalactic travel, combat, object retrieval and short brackets inside the bases. Missions, whether part of the main plot or side, provide most of the time the lead hands; this means that the battle between spaceships is definitely the main part of Rebel Galaxy. Sure, you can theoretically focus on trade and on mining but, as you can strain, there will always be some mission where annihilate opponents or pirate to be resisted.

This focus is still on combat good because Rebel Galaxy is very well done in this department. Clashes occur using different types of weapons (lasers, missiles, plasma cannons …) but all mingle fire from turrets (with lock) to a cannonade style “naval battle”, or pointing with the sides of their ship. Battles are fast and fun but can also, thanks to the dual modes of fire, to be tactical. The shields are placed on all four sides of the ship and also keep their distance (or the best protected offer the side) is part of the fight.

The battles are so much fun and engaging. Maybe at the beginning may seem a bit ‘complex but as soon as you take your hand with the boost of the engines (which take you quickly out of range of the enemy), with the placement of shields and other defensive maneuvers fun definitely takes over .

Special features: the battles, as well as navigation, are made in 2D and only the enemies can move on the vertical axis. A problem? A shame? No, a smart way to make it fun and approachable clashes, preventing the player the whole issue of the radar in three dimensions with its focus on challenging maneuvers. In short, given the kind of game “light”, does not feel the lack of the third dimension.

Graphically, the development team has definitely indulged with effects and color palette.

This part is completed with the management of the armament of their spaceship that can be improved by using credits earned in missions. The progression is not trivial, since every purchase has pros and cons and decide where the player must constantly focus between the rate of fire, range, damage and weapon type. Again, these decisions flavor tactical abound, especially given the fact that there are also the accessories defensive and those related to other activities such as the speed of your ship and freight.

Around the combat team Development built the rest of the game in a functional. The bases provide missions of various difficulty levels, opportunity to trade fairly structured, ability to recruit NPC (which help in battle in a more or less important depending on the fee) and all part of buying spacecraft and accessories that we have mentioned. In addition to the basics, the space will find some unexpected meeting and events also quite interesting; However, the exploration of itself never reaches the level of interest of other games.

The impression is immediately to be in front of an open universe, but not too, a kind of playground where activities abound but where these are still finite in number. The planets are present but are merely points of reference, and frankly travel between a point of interest and another are quickly bored.

The universe of Rebel Galaxy is so well built and full of activities to do but never hides the fact that the fight is the real star of the game, and everything else is sort of secondary activity, even a bit ‘boring to play just to earn some extra money.

Smuggling is another activity that you can play in Rebel Galaxy.

In terms of production values Rebel Galaxy offers other fine qualities. The graphics are very colorful, very easygoing, but also full of special effects quite spectacular. Nebulae, suns, space disturbances are all represented in ways that will leave you speechless for a game that is a indie developed by a team of a few people.

But the best you’ll find out when you get up the speaker volume because Rebel Galaxy has a soundtrack to scream: a rock (often taste a bit ‘country) performed by excellent artists that gives a rhythm to the exciting’ whole experience. If at first it may seem a bit ‘intrusive you will soon move to its rhythm and you calerete easily into the role of Space Cowboy. The sound effects are loud and fracassone and well befitting the speed and the general style of the experience.

In general, then, the production values of the game Rebel Galaxy project definitely higher than the only gameplay can not do to the limitations mentioned above. But the game also shows some imperfection in some respects.

The interface is a bit ‘cumbersome and confusing; often you will find yourself to follow too many indicators on the screen and even the menus are too many and too far from the main screen. There is some imprecision in some game mechanics (the level of difficulty of the missions sometimes change without notice) and we also found a couple of crashes; however several patches are already out before launch and we can expect a strong and continued support from developers.

The story and characterization of various characters is decent but it is one of the aspects in which Rebel Galaxy shows its indie nature; factions are poorly characterized and never go more than a few sentences of threat / triumph to show the different personalities. This is another aspect that often the game may seem a mechanical distributor of missions: but between fights furious, improve your ship, the excellent graphics (and the superb music) will not forget quickly.

Rebel Galaxy is therefore a great product that impresses with its quality and its price is limited (20 Euros). His faults are primarily derived from the stakes that the developers have fixed because, probably, of the limits of resources; However, within those stakes they seem to have done the best possible.
