iPhone, here’s the smartwatch (unofficial)
Fabio Deotto
We, the wait is over, what many already consider the last successor of the lineage inaugurated by Patek Philippe and Louis Cartier has finally seen the light. Yesterday, Samsung has introduced the world to his long-awaited Galaxy Gear , a wristwatch with ambitions to smartphones which will make its official debut next September 25 in 149 countries (including Italy).
Into As expected, Galaxy Gear is a nice little gem: it has a multitouch screen Super AMOLED from 1.63 inch , a camera 1.9 megapixel , one speaker and two microphones , a single core processor 800 Mhz , six different colors seventy app and a host of dedicated sensors perfect for workaholics self-tracking. To make it more palatable, Samsung has seen fit to give a certain autonomy of use to the tool, Gear and so can be used without any connected smartphone to check e-mail and notifications, and to manage some services such as Pinterest and Evernote.
Into yet.
Into Yet someone is already willing to bet that the new smart-clock home Samsung will be short lived , and sent on ahead as frontrunners, could end up becoming cannon fodder for the benefit of competitors that sharpen their claws in the rear.
Into Why? We have identified 5 possible Achilles heels .
1. The strapThe camera and the speaker were placed on the strap. A move that will please the fans of Inspector Gadget, but that he will send in paranoia anyone with at least a modicum of common sense. I do not know about you, but when I buy a watch I try to ensure that it is robust, and that the band do not let me walk to the first fall on a bike. With Gear does concern being perpetually careful where you lean your wrists, all to have the opportunity to take photos from awkward angles and improvise secret agent speaking against the wrist. Not to mention that for some users set with elegance, the idea of ??spending almost $ 300 for a watch strap plastic, is far from inconceivable. And, at least for now, Samsung does not seem willing to market replacement straps in leather. 2. The battery
Samsung has announced that Gear will have a range of o ffice around 25 hours. Which means that the new smartwatch Samsung will have to be put in charge at least once a day. More or less like those smartphones that should be supported, which in some ways contradicts the very purpose for which Samsung has equipped its smartwatch a certain degree of independence from connected devices. Okay, I’m ten hours we had feared in the past days, and there are no competitors on the market that can boast so much autonomy, but considering the price of Gear, this detail could deter a good chunk of users. 3. The screen
Hey, the new watch has a Samsung Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 320×320, but that sciccheria! Oh yes, of course, this will allow you to take pictures and shoot video with ease and then check the performance without having to pull out your smartphone pocket, and the app will look much more inviting. The downside is that a similar screen will be quite difficult to display under dire ct sunlight, conditions that might be quite frequent, whereas one smartwatch need when you can not pull your smartphone out of pocket, which often means when you’re in bike, or you’re walking. From this point of view, at least for some users, it may be more useful to a display and non-Ink backlit as that of Pebble. 4. Price
About Pebble. It should be remembered that for the launch of Samsung Galaxy Gear chose a price rather pushed: $ 299. Pebble costs about half, and has many of the same features offered by Gear. Ok, Pebble does not have a camera, and the screen e-Ink cuts out most of the more graphically demanding app. But in the end, what do you need a smartwatch? To interact more easily with your mobile device and monitor the performance of your ride, or take pictures and browse Pinterest? 5. The reduced compatibility
at least initially Gear will be compatible only with Samsung devices with Android OS 4.3, which means: the new tablet Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1. The Korean company has announced that it will soon be implemented for compatibility with other devices in the Galaxy family (in particular S4), but you do not have any news about compatibility with Android devices. This choice restricts not just the pool of potential buyers. Of course, the possibility exists that Samsung intends to first test the waters among its loyal customers, before throwing the sharks. But Samsung is not Apple, and the last years in the hi-tech have shown that playing defense does not always pay.
